Asia and the PacificAbout the Asia-Pacific Region and ECAs: Urban, rural and indigenous communities throughout the Asia-Pacific region have long borne the brunt of devastating impacts associated with ECA-financed projects. In January 2003, at the invitation of leading Indonesian finance NGO NADI and the Asia Pacific Movement on Debt and Development, Environmental Defense identified and presented at the Asian Social Forum in Hyderabad, India, data on over 600 projects in 25 countries (from Agents of Mass Destruction: ECAs in the Asia Pacific Region - Stephanie Fried - Environmental Defense - Dec. 2002 ) throughout the Asia Pacific region with existing or planned ECA finance. In January 2004, NADI and Environmental Defense (Hawai`i) published an overview of Asia-Pacific ECA activities, including a survey of Asian ECAs. In November 2004, they sponsored first Asia-Pacific Regional ECA Strategy Workshop, hosted by NADI in Indonesia with a steering committee of Asia-Pacific civil society groups from India, Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, New Caledonia and Hawai`i. The groups met and outlined a strategy for broadening the reach and sharpening the focus of regional ECA campaigns. At the meeting, the following Asia-Pacific priorities were identified:
