Finland

Did You Know?

The Finnish government has an extensive network of export credit services through its main export credit agency Finnvera, as well as the subsidiary banks Finnish Export Credit/FIDE and Finnfund. The French ECA, COFACE, is meanwhile guaranteeing the construction of a heavily protested nuclear power plant in Olkiluoto, operated by TVO.

"Greenpeace Christmas gnomes from nine countries slipped into the office building of Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) today in the heart of Helsinki to distribute new safety instructions to TVO staff."

Finnish ECA Projects:

Finnish ECAs have played a role in the financing of projects in China, Latin America, Africa, and Indonesia, among other places. Finnvera has guaranteed projects by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) and Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) in Sumatra, Indonesia which have been accused of irresponsible and illegal logging practices and a lack of regard for property of the native people of Indonesia. Finnish money also supported the import of hospital supplies into Costa Rica by Corporación Fischel, the contract for which was the result of a bribe to former president Rafael Ángel Calderón with money originating from the loan.

TVO's Nuclear Power:

The French ECA, COFACE, is sponsoring the third power plant run by Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) in Olkiluoto, Finland. This will be the fifth nuclear power plant to be built in Finland while other European countries are taking steps to phase out use of nuclear energy. The Olkiluoto plant is the first nuclear power plant to be built in a Western country since Chernobyl. Construction of the plant has been met with heavy protest due to its significance as a step away from renewable energy and the questionable safety of the European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) which will be used at the plant.
