Russia: Sakhalin II Impacts on People

A DUMP TRUCK DRIVER FROM ONE OF THE COMPANIES INVOLVED IN CONSTRUCTION OF
THE LNG PLANT KILLED A WOMAN

-YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, 21.07.2004, TIA "OSTROVA", OKSANA KIRYUSHKINA

On the 20th of July at 15:00 in the 32nd kilometer of the automobile road from Yuzhno-Sakhalink to Korsakov in the region of the village "Tretya Pad'," the driver of an "Isudzu" dump truck belonging to one of the companies involved in constructing the LNG plant in the village of Prigorodnoye started to maneuver to pass [another vehicle] with great speed in front of a pedestrian crossing.  As a result of this violation, he hit a woman that was crossing the road in the pedestrian crossing (her identity is
still not known).  The injured woman was taken to the Korsakov Central District Hospital, where she died from the injuries received.  An investigation is being conducted by the Korsakov Regional Branch of Internal Affairs.  Inspector Sergey Korepov of the GIBDD (State Inspection Bureau for Transportation) informed TIA Ostrova of this.
