JBIC mainly provides various types of loans for projects aiming at promoting the overseas development and securement of resources which are important for Japan, and maintaining and improving the international competitiveness of Japanese industries. The predecessor of JBIC was the Export-Import Bank of Japan (JEXIM) (until 1999).

Who is involved

JBIC is a policy-based financial institution wholly owned by the Japanese government. Ministry of Finance (MoF) is the competent authorities of JBIC.

Dodgy deals asociated with JBIC

JBIC has been involved in various controvertial projects including the Coral Bay Nickel Processing Plant Project in the Philippines, and the notorious BTC pipeline. In addition, JBIC is associated with the Taganito Nickel Processing Plant Project and San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam Project, both in the Philippines, and the Sakhalin I and II Oil and Gas Development Project in Russia.
